Trip Planning

There are three key factors to consider when planning a trip. It is important to ensure that the place, conditions and people are all compatible to ensure a safe and fun trip. We will dive into each of these below.

Place

PackraftingTrips.nz is an awesome database of packrafting routes in New Zealand and a great place to start.

If you’d like to contribute a trip to the website, contact dan@packraftingtrips.nz

Runs are graded following the whitewater grading system. For more information visit our page on river grading.

Conditions

Rivers change difficulty with water level and some need rain to run. Often there is an ideal window. Many rivers have gauges on them managed by the regional council. PackraftingTrips.nz usually notes the best levels and links to the appropriate gauge.

Safety note: Don’t paddle on a rising river

People

PRANZ events are a great way to meet people to paddle with or check out the regional community groups.

Safety note: Don’t paddle solo

Other factors to consider

Access – Some access points are over private land. Please be considerate and ensure you leave all gates as you find them.

Camping – If you are doing a multiway trip and camping along the river please ensure you check and only camp on public land. Some rivers are bordered by private land.

Other users – Please be considerate of other river users. In particular if you are doing a run where commercial jet boat operators run it might be worth getting in touch. See our other river users page for more information.

If you want to join an organised trip check out our upcoming events or there are a few commercial operators in New Zealand. check out the commercial providers
